Introducing Kevin Borillo

Hello, Hello, Hello!
                                                           About Me

I am one of the members of The Vern Show. My name as seen in the title is
Kevin Borillo. At the moment I am 20 years old, but I really don't feel that old, maybe more like 18. I've lived in Malvern, PA my entire life. Its a small quaint town, but its home to me.

The biggest hobby of mine is traveling! I absolutely love it. Just the thrill of being in new places where i'm not usually is the greatest feeling. Even just going to the other side of town to go on an adventure. I see everything new as an adventure. Whether it be looking for a secret room in my house to hanging out with Kangaroos in Australia.

I have three brothers. Alastair is the youngest at 13 years old. Than Aidan at 15. and finally Carrick who attends Kutztown University is 18. (In picture left to right: Me, Carrick, Alastair, and Aidan)

Am I normal?

To me I don't see myself as being 'Normal'. The exact time I broke away from normality still eludes me, but if I had to guess I would say my senior year of High School. I had the option of either running at Outdoor track states or going to prom like everyone else in my grade.

WELL....long story short I chose what I really wanted to do, and that was run my heart out at the state track meet. Yes, I didn't get to attend what was supposed to be what every high school student is excited for. (Prom) In the end I was happy with my decision.

Why does this relate to normality in any way? Because instead of following the norm and going to prom my senior year, I chose to go a different path, one that isn't well worn. And this made me truly happy.

What we are trying to show here is that you don't have to follow the normal path! Who cares if other people are not doing it. As the old saying goes, if all your friends were jumping off bridges would you?

When given a choice, choose whats right for you. Always choosing the 'Normal' way to go will just make you unhappy because you will KNOW where you are headed. Now that doesn't sound like fun, right? Next time you go to a restaurant and they offer you a soup of the day or daily special, break out of that normal pattern and TRY IT!!

Before I conclude I would like leave you with a quote.

“I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it.” (Rosalia de Castro)

It sums up everything.

I hope you enjoyed this segment.
Thanks for reading!

Normality

Dictionary.com states the definition of Normality is: conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; notabnormal; regular.

Us way back when we were normal.... (Farthest: Andrew, James, Kevin)

Regular?? Who wants to be regular! I am sad to say that many people in todays world strive to be normal because they are to scared to be irregular.

Yes I can admit many a times I have been a follower, but a couple years ago was when we (switching tenses because I am now talking about James, Andrew and I) broke away from our normality streak. We took up the hobby of geocaching (See below for geocaching details). Well of course its NORMAL to take up a new hobby, but we changed the rules around a bit and instead of taking the easy path to each we would run through the woods for miles, not on a path. And these "excursions" would take us on all kinds of crazy adventures, underground waterfalls, shocked by electric fences, chased by security, and the list goes on! Well

I will be portraying someone who has broken away from normality themselves every couple of days or so. I will start off with each of one of our members of TheVernShow to start us off, just so you can get to know us a little bit better!!

Keep an eye out for our videos on youtube! FYI we are working on a documentary (Possibly TV show if we can get a producer interested in what we want to accomplish!

Peace out Everyone!

Adventurous Cache (Past)

The date was May of 2007.....

Before I start with the story, let us introduce you to the people who were involved in finding this cache!

Of course theres James and Kevin

        Jay                                                                                                                                 Carrick (Kevin's Brother)

Before we (James and Kevin) go somewhere, the first thing on our to do list is to check and see if there are any geocaches in the area! This time we were heading out to do some volunteer work for Boyscouts at a scout reservation (Camp Horshoe) located right outside of Rising Sun, Maryland. Basically the border of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Jay and Carrick who were also in our boyscout troop joined along in coming to volunteer weekend at the camp. Well we all arrived that Friday night, too dark to do any adventuring, but we were sure some would follow in the next two days. Coincidentally the next day was completely dedicated to working on the fire pit area to prepare it for the ceremony. This of course was incredibly boring.....all this mowing and cutting grass....picking weeds. This was one of our Bad ass moments, we just got up and left. Grabbed the GPS, plugged into the coordinates and the GPS told us we were about 2 miles away from the cache.

Most people would have given up on the thought of walking a round trip of 4 miles. But we had
no intentions of giving up on such a thing as distance. At first the GPS was pointing up the main
road of the scout camp, so we followed the road for a while..than all of a sudden the arrow started
pointing STRAIGHT into the woods. This still didn't stop us, just took a sharp left and entered the abyss.

We were all walking around in the forest for a while, just putting all our faith into the little GPS device just hoping it would take us to the cache because we had absolutely no idea where we were heading. At one point we actually cross a stream and noticed a stone sitting right in the middle of the bank. We walked up to this stone brick looking thing wondering what it was. After a close look we noticed on one side there was a "P" and the other was a "M".  After this analysis we soon realized that this was one of the Mason Dixon Line markers!!! For those who don't know what the Mason Dixon line is...its part of Maryland's border that goes all the way along PA's Southern edge to Delaware's western side. These markers line it showing where the border is.
We were unsure if the marker we found has actually been discovered by anyone else besides us. This discovery started the adrenaline flow, thinking about how cool our adventure had already turned out. After about another 25 minutes of walking the GPS told us we were around a mile away from the cache! but there was one problem....the tree line immediately ended and in front of us was farmland...tons and tons of corn. Unsure of what to do, we all started discussing options such as just turning around, or even possibly pushing through the fields in a stealthy action. Well we came to the conclusion that we should just run through all the farmland laid out before us. Throwing the stealthy part out the window. Kevin still remembers James counting down to the sprint.....3.....2.....1....GO!!!! Immediately we all dropped are heads and started pumping our arms as we first ran through fields of soybeans that only covered to about the top of our ankles. Finally we reached the corn, which was well above our heads. Through the corn stalks we could hear each other scream in pain as the husks scratched at our legs and thighs. A couple minutes later we all busted through the other side of the field, onlooking our next obstacle.....a fence.

This certain fence didn't look ominous at all....just a metal fence held together with some wooden beams. Harmless right? Thats what Kevin thought. "Go up and touch it real quick to see if its electric." Said James. So Kevin went up to touch the fence real quick. And when we say real quick, we mean going up and tapping it as fast as you can because of course Kevin had no idea what to expect!!! And after his touch, he felt nothing. So he just grabbed the fence to pull it aside...and BAM! He couldn't feel his arm. A huge shockwave ran up his arm. He jumped back in shock and pain. "Crap its electric" Kevin exclaimed. So Kevin, Jay, and Carrick all climbed up the wooden part and safely got to the other side without being shocked. James on the other hand being the brave one decided he would show off by attempting to leap through the metal webbing of the fence.  He took some big steps back...turned...and the three safe ones could see the flames in James' eyes as he took a couple strides into a sprint...and he was airborne. he made it through the fence fine until his legs dragged along the metal sending a shock through him. He rolled around on the ground grabbing his crotch. Kevin, Jay, and Carrick just stood around laughing. Finally we helped up James and continued on our way.
Next up......The Octoraro. The river which runs right through camp. We just happened to be about 2 miles away from camp at this point. The GPS said we were so close!! just on the other side of the river. But the river at this point was huge! bigger than it was back at camp. We were just too close at this point to give up. The only option we had was to take off our shoes, and hold them above our heads...our shorts were doomed anyways. The river cross soaked all of us...now we were drenched! But alas we found the geocache! it was hiding right on the other side where we crossed in a web of tree roots. It was a little disappointing since this cache was just a normal cache with nothing too spectacular in it. But it was the first time we had taken Jay geocaching, so he got a hell of a first trip out of us! Ahhhh well i wish this was the end of my story...but its not. Before we had left camp I had forgotten to write down the coordinates of camp....so we had no idea where we were in the woods at this point. And since we left camp we took way too many turns to even remember how to get back. Only one thing to do, march forward, we were bound to hit road at some point! James as the leader, led us through huge patches of green brier. Which shown in the photo above...their not too fun to walk through! After a couple of miles trudging through a mile of this plant, we finally broke out of the forest and onto Red Pump road! We knew where we were now! so we just waltzed the last couple miles back into camp! all torn up and bleeding....What an adventure.....

Welcome!

Hello! Bonjour! Hola! Guten Tag!
This is the first of many posts on
our blog.

My name is Kevin!!!

And my name is James!

We are known in our area as The Vern Show, your probably wondering why. Well we are avid Geocachers! Geocaching (Not geocashing) is an outdoor activity that uses a gps (Global Positioning System) to help find hidden treasure. No...not like gold and buried treasure. What happens is people ALL over the world hide caches, which are a variety of containers with different trinkets inside. In this post we will go over how we got started into geocaching, how you can start geocaching, and how to find your first cache!!!

How We Got Started

We have been natives of Malvern, Pennsylvania all our lives. Or as we call it "The Vern" Our first meeting was in 3rd grade. We had the same teacher, and have been friends ever since. James has moved twice, and eventually settled down only a few houses away from Kevin which has only worked out in our benefit. Both of us were in the same boyscout troop. This opened up the entire outdoors for us. A couple years back we actually did an 80 mile hike through New Mexico. Another fascination of ours is travel! we love to travel, everywhere and anywhere. Whether it be by foot, bike, car or plane. Sometimes we will choose a point and take a straight path just to reach it! We don't really care whats in the way. Geocaching is something we started about 3 years back. Kevin's grandma, Wendy, was the one who shared with us what it was all about. She purchased our first GPS, and thats what spurred almost every adventure since than. So far we have Geocached in the following states:
  • Pennsylvania
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Maryland
  • Delaware
  • California
  • Nevada
  • Utah
  • Arizona
One of our life goals is to find and hide a geocache in every state!!! even including Alaska and Hawaii! From here on out we will be sharing with you every geocache story we have ever encountered to ones that are happening right now at this moment. Even video footage will be soon available! Now we are going to explain to you how to geocache, if you are even slightly interested I highly suggest you try it!

To get started

Before you do anything you may wish to check out the geocaching homepage which can be found at www.geocaching.com. There you will find all the coordinates to the caches, but I will touch on this later. The FIRST thing you must do is create a free account on the site so you can access all the features. After this has been done it might be a good idea to purchase or rummage around to find the following:

  • A good quality GPS, they can range anywhere from $150 to $1000s. The one I purchases was right around $200 and its perfect!!!
  • Some hiking clothing that is meant for getting dirty and beaten up.
  • Mode of transportation to get from one cache to another. Sometimes there are multiple caches in an area so you can just walk from one to another.
  • A sense of adventure. Geocaching is all about finding new things, and becoming attached to the environment around you.
Finding A Cache

So now you have all the necessary gear to start looking for your treasure!!! Now i'll give some step by step instructions to start finding your first cache!

  1. Log onto www.geocaching.com and once your signed into your account, click on find/hide a cache which is located on the left hand sidebar. Now there should be a box where you can type in the zip code for the area you will be geocaching in. Once that is done a list of caches close to your area should appear. The best way, or at least what we think is easier is to click on "Map it" in the top right corner bringing up a map of the area with cache symbols. Find a cache in the area you want to search in and click on it.
  2. All the cache info should pop up, such as name of cache, ect. What you will want to do is read the description of the cache to find out more about it. If you are feeling adventurous I would suggest not looking at the hint or the pictures, but than again it might be a good idea for the first time.
  3. At the top of the page there should be #s, or the coordinates of the cache. You will want to plug this into your GPS device. Once you have all this done, get into those hiking clothes, and jump in the car/bike/walking shoes! NOTE!!! if your going to take an item out of the cache bring small fun objects to put in.
  4. Once at the site of the potential cache you will want to turn on the GPS and locate the satellites. Make sure you have a clear view of the sky at this point so the signal isn't being blocked by a ceiling or branches. This should only take a few minutes.
  5. Now its time to find that treasure!!!
  6. Hopefully you read the GPS manual because all GPS devices are different. With the one I have it has an arrow pointing in the direction of the cache and tells you how far away it is. In that case follow your device in the general direction of the cache. When your withing feet of the cache your ready for step #7!
  7. Depending on whether you looked at the hint on the caches website determines where you will go from here. I suggest looking in the impossible spots too, if your after a multi stage cache, the next coordinates could be ANYWHERE! One cache we found, the coordinates were written on the side of a metal beam that was about 20 feet high. So look around! look everywhere. Possible cache containers can be anything from a plastic container to an old ammo box.
  8. You found it!!! good job! now what you will want to do is open it up and see what it holds. Most caches have a log book so take that out and sign it. Also caches have trinkets or items inside which are open to anyone. What is required is if you take an object you have to replace one!! (If you didn't find it. You still put the effort forth to go outside and move around! We commend you for that! often a cache can be misplaced or lost. We have had this happen many a times)
  9. Replace the cache EXACTLY where it was! So the next people can enjoy the same thing you just experienced.
  10. Once back home you should log back onto www.geocaching.com and log your find!!!
Happy Hunting!!!!
